Reka Matolay, Phd - Committee for Responsible Management Education

CUB established the Committee for Sustainability and developed a Sustainability Strategy for the university. In CBS, the Committee for Responsible Management Education is engaging academic staff and decision makers in responsibility and sustainability activities by spreading best practices of business schools and serves as an interface for bottom-up and outside-in needs and expectations of stakeholders. A founding member of the Dean’s Strategic Advisory Board is the executive director of the Business Council for Sustainable Development in Hungary (BCSDH, local chapter of WBCSD).

CBS is member of PRME – Principles for Responsible Management Educations since 2010. It has published

CBS is the founding member of the PRME CEE Chapter.

CBS piloted BSIS in 2013, was awarded with the BSIS Label in 2016, and renewed it in 2018.

The school piloted Business School Impact System (BSIS) on behalf of the EFMD

CBS employs an Equal Opportunity Officer and has received the Best Equal Opportunity Plan award.

There are numerous student organizations with responsibility and sustainability missions at CUB.

Teaching and Learning

Several courses are fully dedicated to responsibility and sustainability in CBS programs (BA/BSc –12 courses; MA/MSc – 15, MBA – 3, PhD – 2, in sum: 31). At least 15 other courses incorporate ERS related messages, activities and ILOs. Project-based learning with social entrepreneurs should also be highlighted: service learning and community engagement take place with 10-15 CSOs annually.

The 1st funded Horizon 2020 program of CBS – and that of the whole Corvinus – is EnRRICH: This international consortium engages in a Coordination and Support Action (CSA) on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), explores promising teaching and learning practices of RRI at CBS, and develops new RRI-related features for the curriculum, including the establishment of a Science Shop.

Research and Publications

Approximately 100 scholarly publications are related to responsibility and sustainability annually. A snapshot specifically about these publications was also provided to CBS academic staff by highlighting them in the publication handbook of CBS in 2013. There are 3 Research Centers fully dedicated to responsibility and sustainability topics in CBS:

  • Business Ethics Center – Founded in 1993 with the mission to promote ideas, models and techniques of business ethics in higher education, academic research and business life. The functioning of the Center is based on the conviction that ethics is a relevant aspect of all levels of economic activity, from individual and organizational to societal and global.
  • Regional Center for Energy Policy Research It provides professional analysis on networked energy markets that are both commercially and environmentally sustainable. REKK is ranked one of the 50 global 'Top Energy and Resource Policy Think Tanks’ in University of Pennsylvania's 'Global Go To Think Tank Index.
  • Sustainability Indicators Research Centre It covers research in the field of sustainability management, carbon footprint calculation and sustainable consumption.

Six (out of 13) defended PhD Theses and several papers at the Student’s Scientific Conferences covered responsibility and sustainability in 2015.

Key Research Topics are

  • business and biodiversity
  • ethics and responsibility in business decisions
  • environmental and responsible marketing
  • environmental and sustainability strategies
  • social innovation
  • sustainable supply chain management
  • sustainability accounting and reporting
  • sustainable consumption

Other Activities

Faculty of CBS is volunteering and participating in evaluating students’, CSOs’ and corporate activities in juries of awards, competitions, and funds in these fields (e.g. CSR Marketplace, Delphine Sustainable Supplier Award by the Hungarian Telekom, Role Model Social Entrepreneurship competition, Youth2Youth competition on Social Innovation).

CBS is regularly participating in the European initiative of Researchers’ Night, not only offering guided tours in the buildings but also providing insights to school’s research and teaching activities.

The Central Library is open to the public, admitting approximately 4 000 non-Corvinus readers annually. It is contracted to 28 secondary schools in Budapest: high school students participate in community work there.

Energy efficiency investments (insulation, energy saving lighting, modernization of the heating system) in the historic buildings were implemented between 2010 and 2013.

All buildings have easy access, and these are barrier-free, including rest areas for students with special needs. 15 percent of the New Building is covered by green surfaces.

Selective waste collection was (re)introduced with contribution of a student organization.
